LANARK COUNTY GENEALOGICAL
SOCIETY
MARCH 1996 - 3
The regular meeting of the Lanark County Genealogical Society was
held on Saturday, March 2, 1996 at the IOOF Hall in Carleton
Place at 1:30pm.
President Irma Willoughby opened the meeting and welcomed all
attending.
Dave Willoughby welcomed everyone to the IOOF Hall and explained
where the name IOOF came from. The International Order of
Foresters originated in England and was formed by a group of
tradesmen and commoners. As it was illegal for this group of
people to be organized, they had a secret sign and password which
they used to recognize fellow members. They came to North
America in 1819 and to Canada (Brockville) in 1874. The IOOF is
the only organization allowed in the United Nations. They
support the Eye Bank, Arthritis Society, Senior Citizens Home in
Barrie, Ont. and Camp Trillium as well as many other
organizations. They also supply all the Minor Hockey equipment
for Carleton Place. The Ladies Organization is the Rebecca Lodge
and they work with the IOOF.
It was moved by Marilyn Snedden and seconded by Eric Knudsen that
the minutes of the February meeting be accepted as printed.
Motion carried.
Helen Gillan gave the Treasurer's report, whereby she had
deposited $1,185.01 since the last meeting, giving the LCGS a
present bank balance of $3,902.41. Marilyn Snedden had a bill of
$130.37 for stamps, Helen Gillan $6.22 for stamps and the rent
for the Hall [Feb meeting] was $25.00. It was moved by Ernest
Miller and seconded by Margaret Craig that the bills be paid.
Motion carried.
Lone gave the Financial Report on the audit of the books and
found the books to be in order. He handed out copies of the
statement for the year 1995.
Walter Brown reported from the ad hoc committee, which had met at
Irma Willoughby's on the Tuesday following the Feb. meeting. On
Wednesday, Walter met with the Vice-President, Academic at
Algonquin College in Ottawa where he was favourably received, but
of course nothing was settled. The ad hoc committee met the next
week and a brief was drafted and given to Ann MacPhail who also
prepared an overview of the special collection with respect to
its history, holdings, and activity. These papers were presented
to Lanark County Council on Wednesday, Feb 21. There was also a
meeting at the Perth Town Hall requesting that the Heritage
Carpentry program be kept in Perth. It is expected that a
decision will be announced by Algonquin College in Ottawa by
March 15, 1996, and if it is unfavourable, Walter Brown will send
a letter to the Ontario Archives enquiring about the Land
Registry Copy Books which are housed at the Perth campus of
Algonquin College.
Marilyn Snedden spoke on the conference planned for the 4th of
May at the Perth campus of Algonquin College and suggested that
the registration be limited to 80 people. Carol Bennett McCuaig
is the main speaker, with the other speakers to be determined by
response from registrants. Marilyn also read a letter from Carol
Bennett McCuaig with respect to copyright on her books which
forbids anyone from making photocopies of all or part of her
publications. Marilyn will reply to the letter.
There was discussion with resect to persons contacting the LCGS
for information without including SASEs, etc. Moved by Walter
Brown and seconded by Lorne Hunt that we charge $5.00 non-members
for enquiries to be placed in the newsletter or for research.
Motion carried.
It was moved by Roberta Sargeant and seconded by Eric Knutsen
that the sum of $300.00 be given to Marilyn Snedden to purchase
stamps and that this amount be given when needed for the purchase
of stamps. It was also noted that long distance calls be
recorded by those preparing for the Conference so that they may
be reimbursed. Motion carried.
Shirley Sommerville requested that if anyone had extra 3-ring
binders, she would appreciate having them for the LCGS collection
at the Smiths Falls Public Library. These will be used for
family history records, cemetery records and census records.
Roberta Sargeant presented sections 2a and 2b of the 1891 census
for the Town of Smiths Falls. This completes the 1891 census
records for Lanark County. Shirley Sommerville will insert them
in the folder at the Smiths Falls Public Library.
Walter Brown reported that the LDS Library at Smiths Falls has
obtained an index of ten million Scottish surnames on a CD for
marriages and births, some of which date back to the 1500's.
They also have some of the indexes for vital records for the
Province of Ontario. More of these records will be purchased as
they receive donations to fund them.
Marilyn Snedden introduced our guest speaker, Cecil Buck, who
talked about his trip back to Holland last summer. Cecil
reported that World War records are now available to the public
for research. [See further in newsletter for info on how to
access these records]. Cecil was thanked by Irma Willoughby and
was given a pass to the May Conference in appreciation for his
presentation.
On the motion of Dick Beaumont, the meeting was adjourned.

MAXWELL- CUNNINGHAM- We are tracing the family of Martin MAXWELL
and Bedelia CUNNINGHAM. In the 1861 census, Martin and family
were living in Drummond township. It is possible that Bedelia
was a sister of Patrick CUNNINGHAM, who was farming in Drummond
township at that time. Later, Martin moved to L15, C6 in South
Sherbrooke where they were located at the time of the 1871
census. The family farmed this land until the early 1900's. Of
Martin's children, Daniel married Elizabeth CLARK(E) and stayed
to farm the land in South Sherbrooke, Bedelia MAXWELL married
John O'NEILL, a blacksmith whose family came from Burgess North,
John is believed to have moved to Almonte to work in the woollen
mills. We would welcome hearing from anyone who has any
information concerning these families.

From "A Pioneer History of the County of Lanark" by Jean
McGill & other sources: Francis ALLAN (from Leith, dockyard area
NE of Edinburgh) and Janet COWIE (from Corstophine, then west of
Edinburgh) eloped and were married in Edinburgh. As her family
considered a mere tax collection clerk from the "wrong part of
town" too lowly, they were disowned. After the birth of their
first son (Sept 1814), they emigrated from Greenock to Canada
arriving July 1815. In July 1817 statistical information listed
Francis Allan, wife and one child living with the Scotch Line
settlers in Canada - as their second son was born in 1816 the
first one must have died previously (possibly during the ocean-
crossing). Francis Allan, appointed Crown Lands Agent at Perth
in 1837, surveyed every settler in McNab township and produced a
report which plainly showed the tyranny of their Laird. In the
late 1830s Francis Allan was also appointed as Postmaster of
Perth.
Any information of the Allans would be appreciated.

WORLD WAR I RECORDS
Procedure for searching and obtaining records: Go to the
National Library and Archives (395 Wellington St., Ottawa) and
obtain a research pass at the front desk (this only takes a few
seconds). Go to the third floor, turn right when you get off the
elevator through the glass doors, pass the first desk and go to
the desk at the far end of the room - this is where you arrange
to go to Tunney's Pasture where the military records are actually
located. (Building 18, room 202, second floor - parking is a bit
tricky in this area as there are very few spaces for the public).
The records at Building 18 are the attestation sheets. These
sheets are what a person fills in when joining the military; they
contain regimental number, unit joined, date of joining, next of
kin, age, hair, eyes and complexion, height, weight, chest
diameter and expansion, address when joining, name of unit if
having previous service.
To obtain the actual records, you have to write to:
Privacy Co-ordination Office
Veterans Affairs
PO Box 7700
Charlottetown PEI C1A 8M9
They may give you a form to fill in and send, if not, enclose in
your letter the name, regimental number and unit along with a
five dollar cheque or money order made out to the Receiver
General.

THE TRAVELS OF EVAN EDWARDS AND SOME OF HIS FAMILY
On 1 March 1770 Edward EDWARDS of Rahinduff, farmer, of the
County of Wexford leased part of the Town and Lands of Rahinduff
containing sixty one acres and twenty porches from Edward
Tottenham of Ballinahown in the County of Wexford. It was leased
for the lived of Edward EDWARDS, and Evan EDWARDS and William
EDWARDS, sons of this Edward EDWARDS, and the survivors of them,
etc., etc.
Evan EDWARDS, a son of the above William EDWARDS, came to Canada
in 1819. He located land as an emigrant in the Lanark Military
Settlement in the Township of Ramsay, concession 8, lot 14 west,
100 acres on 18 June 1822. This land was sold on 18 July 1829 to
Daniel Shipman.
On 24 April 1824 Evan EDWARDS married Rebecca YOUNG (per Perth
records of the Anglican Church). Rebecca YOUNG was a daughter of
Andrew YOUNG and Mary LOWE and this Palatine family emigrated to
Pakenham Twp. in 1823 from Limerick, Ireland.
Evan EDWARDS had two brothers in that area - (1) Edward EDWARDS
married Jerusha KNOWLTON and lived on Lot 4 Concession 3 North
Crosby Twp. His will was dated 15 June 1831 and registered 28
Sept 1832. She later married Samuel T. MARSHALL. (2) Thomas
EDWARDS married Elizabeth FRANCES - "Thomas drowned at Crosby and
wife and child moved down near Brockville" (I am looking for
further information for this family).
If someone could help me with the reason for the emigration
pattern of Evan EDWARDS and Rebecca YOUNG for the years 1824 to
1830, I would be pleased. Their first child was born 26 Sept
1825 at Crosby, the second child was born 13 May 1827 "near
Queenston", and the third child was born 20 Aug 1829 in Buffalo
NY. All three children were baptized 28 July 1830 Twp. Pakenham,
County Lanark, per Methodist records. I believe the Young family
was living in Pakenham at this time although they later moved to
Stafford Twp., Renfrew County.
In the 1842 census of Pakenham Twp., Evan EDWARDS and his family
were living on lot 6 concession 6. Where they lived between
1829/39 and 1842, I do not know and I have not been able to
locate the baptism records for any of the five children born
during that time. He did purchase this property in 1843 and sold
it in 1852.
The EDWARDS family moved to Wilberforce Twp., Renfrew County
about 1843 and in 1847 he wrote a petition for land in
Wilberforce Twp.. Eventually he and his family owned about 600
acres in the Rankin area, and they are listed in the 1851 census
of Wilberforce Twp.
The only descendants of this EDWARDS family in the Wilberforce
Twp. area are the children of one daughter who died very young.
While one son and his wife lived and died in Wilberforce Twp.,
their three sons all went to Dakota Territory. Two daughters and
two sons of Evan EDWARDS went to Dakota Territory with their
families. Another son, Thomas EDWARDS, went to Carlow Twp.,
Hastings County, and although he spent some time in Dakota
Territory, he did not settle there. Another daughter lived in
North Bay.
A sister of Evan EDWARDS, Phoebe JACKSON (widow) came to Canada
with her family about 1841, was listed in the 1842 census of
Pakenham Twp. and later moved to Wilberforce Twp. before the 1851
census. Another brother, William EDWARDS and family, came to
Wilberforce Twp. and was listed in the 1851 census of Wilberforce
Twp. While most of the first generation of these two families
stayed in the Eganville area, one daughter of William EDWARDS was
a pioneer in the North Bay area.
I am a great granddaughter of the Thomas EDWARDS who married Ruth
LETT and went to Carlow Twp. Their son, Charles EDWARDS, married
his cousin Susan STUART of Wilberforce Twp. and eventually moved
to New Liskeard, Ont. My father is a son of Charles and Susan
and we lived near New Liskeard. When Willard and I were married
we came to live near Pembroke, so I have spent several years just
a few miles from the early homes of my EDWARDS, LETT and YOUNG
ancestors in Wilberforce and Stafford Townships.
Many members of the EDWARDS family followed a very common pattern
for emigrants as they settled in Lanark County, moved to Renfrew
County, and then proceeded "west" and this family chose Dakota
Territory. But, I "came home"!
I will be very pleased to correspond with anyone about these
families.
